What is the best trunk bike rack on the market for securing the bike and for security?

Question by MandaLGJ: What is the best trunk bike rack on the market for securing the bike and for security?
My husband really wants a good bike rack for his mountain bikes. I have no idea what kind to get him, but the one he has now has Velcro straps and he doesn’t like it at all. I need one that is more secure at holding the bikes (just two at a time) in place as well as provides security from theft. Please help!

Everyone I know who has a Saris trunk bike rack likes it.

Trunk racks are not great at security unless you can somehow securely lock the bikes to the car itself. That’s getting harder and harder these days as cars have more and more plastic components. That’s one reason I abandoned trunk racks and got a hitch rack instead. If theft protection is important, you should consider a hitch rack for your husband. It’s also better for the bikes and the car.

If you want security get a roof rack, they lock on and are much more stable than a trunk rack. The last thing you want is a $ 1000+ bike falling off of the car at 75mph and getting smashed on the freeway. I have a Yakima roof rack and it does very well, bikes are secure even on bumpy dirt roads. Thule is another good brand. You can save a lot of money getting the basic racks on ebay, and then buying the car model specific mounts at a local store.

I have a Saris Bones II and it works pretty good. I run a cable through the center of it and lock it to the inside of my trunk. I then lock the bike to the cable if I need to leave it unattended. They come with a lifetime guarantee.
